Vilnius is Lithuania’s capital. It is known for its baroque architecture seen especially in its medieval Old Town. The 16th-century Gate of Dawn containing a shrine with a sacred Virgin Mary icon once guarded an entrance to the original city.
The Vilnius Castle Complex consists of fortifications. including the Royal Palace and the brick citadel Gediminas’ Tower. Nearby, Pilies Street is lined with cafes and handicraft shops. Just beyond the Old Town core is the Museum of Genocide Victims, set in former KGB headquarters. The bohemian neighborhood of Užupis across the Neris River roughly divides the historic center from modern Vilnius.
